Access to renewable energies, water and sustainable infrastructures

The ACCIONA Microenergy Foundation—Fundación ACCIONA Microenergía (FUNDAME)—was established in 2008 with the aim of providing access to sustainable energy, water and infrastructure for rural communities in developing nations.

Through the Foundation, ACCIONA attempts to help ease the poverty of people and communities by providing access to safe water, electricity supply and basic infrastructures, through financial, technological and management resources on the strategic aspects of its activity - and all within a sustainable model.

In the Peruvian region of Cajamarca, FUNDAME, alongside Perú Microenergía, is carrying out two programs: Luz en Casa ("Light in the Home") and Luz Comunitaria ("Light in the Community"). Perú Microenergía is Peru's leading basic electricity services provider and is dedicated one hundred percent to renewable energies. It is currently providing services to 610 families in the Cajamarca region.

Since 2010, FUNDAME has been launching a number of volunteering campaigns offering a range of activities which, as well as supporting Perú Microenergía, extend to other ACCIONA Microenergy Foundation projects that are either still in their early stages or are scheduled for a later date. Volunteers can take part either face-to-face or online, and occasionally the Foundation has called for a number of part-time volunteers (a scheme also known as "Solidarity Vacations"), in the firm belief that the best way to get involve in the abovementioned projects is by taking part actively and hands-on.

The Luz en Casa program sets out to provide basic electricity services through Domestic PV Solar Units (DSU) to 3,500 poverty-level homes in rural areas for which there are no plans for large-scale electrification; that is, they are not included in the Electrification of Isolated Rural Zones, or EZRA, plan. Since 2009, the Luz en Casa program has been an official partner of the European Commission's Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign, in the "Development Cooperation" section.

Luz Comunitaria is a project aimed at providing basic electricity services to the community centers (e.g. schools, medical centers, places of worship and public meeting halls) in each of the towns and communities covered by the Luz en Casa project. Luz Comunitaria is promoted jointly by the ACCCIONA Microenergy Foundation, Energy Without Frontiers and Spain's Fundación Ingenieros del ICAI para el Desarrollo (The ICAI Engineers for Development Foundation). Perú Microenergía is the local partner. GTZ Enved collaborates with the Luz Comunitaria-Cajamarca project by providing data collection on the requirements of the participating towns and communities and training local installers.
