The theme of World Environment Day 2010 will be biodiversity. With the slogan “Many Species. One Planet. One Future”, UNEP aims to raise awareness of the importance of safeguarding the existence of all the species and biological diversity on the Planet.

Once again, the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon’s message
raises the alarm about the loss of biodiversity that our Planet is undergoing.
This year’s global host is Rwanda,
a country of exceptional biodiversity, which has developed an imaginative strategy for sustainable development and the protection of biological diversity with a series of new policies and laws aimed at environmental sustainability.
The global celebrations will take place in Rwanda with three days of events – between 3rd and 5th June – and will culminate with the epic Kwita Izina ceremony, which will be held in the world-famous Volcanoes National Park, when two baby gorillas will be named. We are all invited to get involved in this by placing our vote
on the website.
Thousands of parallel activities have been organised all over the world to celebrate this day and to prick our ecological conscience, as well as to encourage the involvement of both adults and children, in schools, private companies, governments, and all those who want to do their bit, however small it may seem.
Last year, hundreds of people all over the world submitted their ideas and suggestions for “greening” our daily routine. The United Nations Environment Programme encourages you to be one of them this year, send in your suggestion.
